This Andalusian town on the occidental Costa del Sol has some of the oldest civilizations of the Mediterranean coast. From the ancient times there have been settlements of the Phoenicians, Greek and Roman people. More recently, we have the remains of the Nasrids of the Muslim dynasties that governed Malaga in the middle age, such as La Torre de los Molinos (the Tower of the Mills), later onwards called Pimentel, in honour of the count who helped the Catholic Kings to take over Granada and Malaga.
In the 50s and 60s, some of the celebrities that were looking for refuge in the then fishers village of Torremolinos, were Grace Kelly, Orson Welles or Frank Sinatra.
It was the era of the big Hollywood movies in Spain and due to the tourist complexes with hotels as mythic as el Pez Espada tourism at the Costa del Sol became a reference. The domino effect in other municipalities closeby such as Mijas, Marbella or Fuengirola, converted the Costa del Sol in the centre of international glamour and avant garde.
Currently, foreigners take up around 26% of the residents registered at Torremolinos. The majority are British, Dutch, German, French and Scandinavian. Torremolinos has the reputation of being one of the most cosmopolitan municipalities of Andalusia. It could not be else: who does not fall in love with its life style and the sea. It is undoubtedly the option of many people to be their holiday residence, but also many have their permanent residence.
Route so you don’t miss anything out:
We start the route at the old town, more specifically at the calle San Miguel. This is the commercial street by excellence, where you can go eating and shopping. At the end of the street, you will find the church of San Miguel, and close by the Torre de Los Molinos mentioned before, hence the name of the town.
You can’t miss out the square plaza de la Costa del Sol, that after becoming a pedestrian area, it has been converted in a reference for urban art, and you can see beautiful street expositions.
Furthermore, following the cultural line, let’s highlight the Cultural Centre Pablo Ruiz Picasso, which has been declared Asset of Cultural Interest.
Another of the architectural monuments to be emphasized is the Casa de los Navajos, a place in neomudéjar-style, also considered Asset of Cultural and Historical Interest, of which the inside has been reformed and was inspired by the Alhambra of Granada.
Other places of interest are situated in the neighbourhood Carihuela, where you have the beach and the Church Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen. In July, they celebrate the Feria del Carmen in honour of its virgin Carmen is carried around the town during a procession. This is a fishers’ neighbourhood, where you can enjoy its typical gastronomy, gazpacho (cold tomato soup), sardines, seafood and you can easily find the typical restaurants with “pescaito frito” (fried fish).
The neighbourhood Calvario is another area that conserves the traditional flavour of Torremolinos, where you can find souvenir shops and typical food, or you can enjoy the street market on the area of the “feria” every Thursday.
The Beaches of Torremolinos:
From the beach promenade, the most important area for hotels and restaurants, you can go to the main beaches: those of Bajondillo, La Carihuela, Los Álamos o Playamar are some of them. They are splendid urban beaches with full services and all of the necessary facilities, of dark sand and moderate waves. The beaches of Bajondillo and Carihuela are the most popular ones as these are the closest ones to the city centre.

If you want to go out with the family, you can go to Aqualand, a water park of some 70.000 square metres. Close by the golden mile, you will find the crocodile Park, where you can observe so many species of reptiles in an exotic guided visit to the park.
Torremolinos is also known for its nightlife. You can find many discotheques and pubs all over the neighbourhood of Carihuela and the beach promenade. It is also interesting to highlight the gay-tourism. Torremolinos is a very gay-friendly town, with pubs mainly concentrated in the square Plaza de la Nogalera.
