What are the accounting books?
These are the books in which the accountancy of your company in Spain is recorded. Accounting books may be either obligatory to file or voluntary and are regulated in the Commercial Code in Articles 25 to 33 (See Commercial Code).
How to file the accounting books in Spain
The most frequent way to present your accounting books is to do so digitally.
- A) The accounting books of a company in Spain might be presented through a CD with the information recorded at the Companies House of the province where the company has its registered office.
- B) By telecommunications (online).
Databases are made by accounting programs that have this option with programs provided by the Companies House in Spain.
Who is subject to presenting the accounting books?
This is also set out in the Commercial Code and, fundamentally, this can be any company registered at the Companies House in Spain.
When must the accounting books be presented in Spain?
All companies registered at a Spanish Companies House must present their accounting books within the next four months after the close of the tax year.
Are there penalties in the event that the accounting books of a company are not presented in Spain?
There are penalties for not depositing the Annual Accounts of your company; however, there are no penalties for not presenting the accounting books.
The accounting books have the value of proof before any public organism (Tax Office) and before the courts.
